Moving into your first management role is exciting — and it changes almost everything about how you work. Your success now depends on what your team achieves. These five skills make the biggest difference in the first months.

1. Clear communication

Explain the goal, the reason behind it and what “done” looks like. Most problems in teams start with expectations that were never said out loud.

2. Delegation

Holding on to every task feels safer, but it slows the team down. Delegate outcomes, not just steps, and agree when you will check in.

3. Giving feedback

Specific, timely feedback — positive and corrective — helps people grow. Describe the behaviour and its effect, then agree on the next step together.

4. Prioritising

Not everything is urgent. Decide what matters most this week, say no to what does not, and protect time for the work that moves the team forward.

5. Handling change and conflict

Change brings questions and disagreement. Listen first, explain the reasons, and focus discussions on the problem rather than the person.

Our Leadership Management course practises each of these skills through cases, role plays and team exercises.
